Productivity is amplified version of work.
It's the value created per unit of input.
"I worked 8 hours today"
Did you really?
Work is measured in output not input.
Was those 8 hours really spent on maximising the output?
If this is the definition of work is that, so what is productivity?
Productivity is subjective whereas work is objective.
Productivity is simply, how much of the input you put in, energy, time and focus, is returned measured in the value you created.
I have been in the field of productivity for more than 2 years now.
My fav creator on productivity was none other than Ali Abdaal, but now? Its myself .
I noticed that productivity differs in each field.
For example, watching a video on productivity made by Dan Koe and Ali Abdaal would be different.
If you look in our day to day life, we can clearly see that.
A productive day of a 9-5 looks like this:
Wake up at 7am
Go to work
Come back from work
Do assignments, tasks, projects for 1-2 hours
Chill the evening
A productive day of a writerpreneur looks like this:
Wake up at 5 am
Do deep work for 4 hours
Relax for few hours
Hit the gym
Big fat lunch
Relax the evening with books
While they are both productive days, why do they differ?
The difference is the value created.
The value is subjective.
Doing deep work for 4 hours is valuable to a writerpreneur whereas doing assignments for few hours is valuable to a 9-5.
This is why now, my fav productivity coach is ME.
I am always open to experiment with new methods to optimise my daily routine.
Okay, so what should we target if we want to have a productive routine?
Flow State
There are two types of work,
➤ Deep work - requires full attention
➤ Shallow work - requires not much attention
Deep work is where most of the value you seek is created.
You enter the flow state:
✤ Ideas flow like crazy
✤ You laser focus on one thing
✤ Your creativity spikes
Flow state is where impossible is turned into possible.
The more you enter the flow state, the more value you will create.
But if your day to day contains lots of distractions, probably your attention span is not long enough to stay laser focused on one thing for a long time.
Best part?
We can train it!
How to enter
Your golden rule is to eliminate distractions (during and beforehand).
This is why I love mornings
❖ 0 distractions
❖ Full of energy
❖ Your focus is at its peak
Other than distractions, there is one more enemy, writer's block.
Consumption is your best ally to tackle it.
However, consuming the wrong way will only make things worse.
You don't want to consume right before the session, consume other times.
You want to use what you consume later, ideally not the same day.
Why?
So that the subconscious can do its job and create unique ideas.
Remember, creativity is the fuel of flow state.
The more creative you are, the easier and the longer you can get in and stay in it.
The subconscious works best while sleeping, which is why using new knowledge next day is the best.
It might seem a bit weird, but trust me it works.
This letter you are reading is based on one newsletter and one video.
I was able to construct a new definition of productivity from it.
Routine
Now to enter the flow state, establishing a routine is a no brainer.
For the past couple of months:
➥ I never scheduled anything
➥ Did the most leverage tasks injustice 2-4 hours
➥ Never struggled with entering the flow state
All thanks to having a routine (yes mornings + coffee are the magic).
Establish your own routine, discover your own value.
You might think you did a great work after 5 hours, but if it's truly not valuable to you, you won't be satisfied and you will feel you weren't productive.
A common problem could be someone els assigning their value to you,
⁍ Completing unnecessary project you could have declines
⁍ Attending a meeting you weren't needed in
⁍ Hanging out with friends (because they see it as valuable)
You need to discover what is valuable to you.
For me, relaxing is one of the few things I really consider productive.
So I always aim to watch at least one episode of a series on the weekends.
I have 24hrs a day:
8 sleep
4-5 hours deeps work
2-3 Gym
There is still 6 hours left!
I want to start living my future life now, why delay it?
If someone ever try to argue with you about how you are not productive, just ignore them because they can't see the value you are creating, because it was never valuable to them.
This is the mindset you need to go on to 2025.
Let's win big Lads.
On next Monday, I will write my last newsletter of the year, talking about how to enter 2025 with full force.
Stay tuned.
Talk soon,
