Want to have 25 hours in a day?
Wake up early!
2025 just started.
X's timeline is filled with "How to make 2025 your year" posts.
➥ Set a goal
➥ Build a habit
➥ Cut off distractions
While all of these advices help, it's better to address the real game changer... TIME
All the actions you take require time, the resource you can't make more off.
Yet, sometimes you feel you have more of it than other times.
The answer is early mornings.
I have been waking up at 4-5 am nearly everyday for 2+ years now.
It wasnt because of some toxic productivity hack, but simply cuz of time.
A normal morning would look like this
5am : wake up
5am - 7am : focused work (high leverage)
7am - 8am: engage + connect
8am - 9am: breakfast + relaxation
By the time most of the people wake up around 9am, I have done most of what I need to do for the day and ready to head to the gym.
After coming back from the gym around 12-1pm, most of the people are just getting started with their day while I am done with my day.
"well you must be sleeping early…"
Indeed, around 9pm.
But having 8 hours (1pm-9pm) to yourself guilt free to do whatever you want is something very worth it.
It literally feels you have way more time than everyone else.
But there is a hidden condition for such event to keep happening on repeat…
That's Purpose!
Purpose
If you don't have a purpose or a goal to work towards, why would you even wake up early?
Excuses pop up everywhere whenever there is something you have to do.
It often leads to procrastination.
But excuses popping up when the alarm goes off at 5 am are on a different level.
♦️ The weather is cold
♦️ You bed is telling you to stay
♦️ Your mind is convincing you to hit the snooze button
It only gets worse.
If you don't have a purpose and drive, you will only end up following your excuses.
With that out of the way, let's discuss the 3 main parts to waking up early regularly!
Sleep schedule
This is a no brainer.
Sleep well → perform well.
Sleep bad → perform bad.
Optimise your sleep.
And the best way to do that is by sleeping the same time every single day.
This is how you will wake up without an alarm, one day.
Yes it's possible, it happens to me often, I wake up before the alarm goes off around 10 mins.
Morning routine
"You don't need a morning routine…"
That is all noise, ignore it.
You need a morning routine.
It is the only thing that will give you clarity every single morning.
Without it, you will only end up strengthening your excuses and going back to bed.
But no need to overcomplicate.
Make one that you enjoy and gets the job done.
Everyone focuses only on "gets the job done", and that's why they can't sustain it.
I was able to sustain mine because I had the "enjoyment" part.
Add simple things like:
⁍ Drinking coffee
⁍ Going out for a walk
⁍ Listen to your fav music
Also keep in mind, your morning routine will keep on changing depending on the situation, be open to experimentation.
Night routine
Night routine and morning routine go hand in hand.
Your night routine is made to only support your morning routine
Get your stuff ready for next morning, get ready to sleep on time.
Small actives to optimise sleep.
My night routine is simply to never use my phone one hour before bed, that's it.
Keep it simple.
Application
If you never woke up early before, applying all these in one go will be difficult.
Start small.
Weekends will do the job.
Instead of sleeping in on weekends, wake up the same time you wake up on weekdays.
That may mean only 2 hours earlier, but you need to get that sensation of having more time.
After that you can slowly increase it, e.g. wake up one hour earlier on weekdays
In my University life, I would wake up 5 am and do 2 hours of language learning before I head to my lectures.
But I started with waking up at 7, then 6:30, 6, 5:30, then 5.
Always start small, and improve slowly.
That's all for today.
